Photoshop Typography by R727 Photoshop Typography by R727
I thought my photo-editing tutorial was excessive. BIG FILE. This one's a whole lot of tl;dr, but it's a tutorial about text, so I guess no one can complain that much. :P

Someone make a tutorial about how HUGANTIOUS files are completely unnecessary so I can read and learn. -_-

So here's the typography tutorial. First part is about what all the menus on the Photoshop/Illustrator Character Palette do in simple terms. The interesting bit, different ways to play with text and make it look good on photos and images, that's at the bottom. Feel free to skip ahead.

Any type geeks out there, correct me on my definitions -- it's been a long time since I set foot in a typography class. ^^; If anything doesn't make sense, ask away~

My example text, "Counting Down the Hours", comes from a Ted Leo and the Pharmacists song I happened to be listening to when I was making this. ^^

Very informative and useful! I loved that you included "whys" of doing things, and not just "do this".

You had an entire typography class? We learned the gist of this in one-two classes in Intro to Photoshop. I kind of wish we'd had an entire class on it... Then I would actually know shit.

This is a great recap of the basics; even introduced a few terms I'm not familiar with. Some other great things to explore/explain would be: how to use text compositionally, since many new photographers/artists, including me derp, aren't aware of how to place text in a composition or how the human eye looks at text before it looks at anything else in an image; when to use which typeface, and which typefaces are intended for which application, as hipsters will murder you if you don't know typefaces :'D; and how to incorporate text into an image in a way that adds to the impact of the image rather than distract from it (sort of related to the first suggestion).

Yeah, in school my major was required to take four typography classes. There was a fifth you could take as an elective too. ^^;

Unfortunately I don't know that I'm qualified to make a tutorial for the things you listed; I definitely didn't learn any of that stuff in school and the way I apply typography is mostly by instinct and I don't know that I'd be good at explaining it. OTL But the suggestions are definitely interesting topics!

I did some of this without realising I did some of this. :O But I think I slack more often than not. ;; Really nice tutorial, and lovely pictures. I didn't know there was a difference between "font" and "typeface." Lovely colours and layout and everything. Well done! :D

And suddenly, I Can Haz Cheesburgers became beautifully scripted.

Naw, but seriously, great demo. I'm Ps Certified and I've gone through a course in Indesign and I'd say you covered all the major points, most of the minor points, and a few that are quite interesting, and new to me.
